The Safdies are some of the best filmmakers working today. The score by Oneohtrix Point Never is fucking LEGENDARY. Pattinson is amazing and the cinematography is gorgeous. Just so gorgeous.Īn exhausting, electric experience.

Loved the performance and characters as well.Īs the polar opposite of the title character, I found this film so real and heartwarming and relatable. So tight and well written, with some excellent foreshadowing and mix of humor and horror. Maybe my favorite screenplay of the year. I understand the hate it gets but I loved every second. I actually got home from the theater and just sat in the shower for a while. It viscerally effected me in ways that very few films ever have. One of the most insane experiences I’ve ever had with a film. It’s like they took a camera and filmed real people!”

The guy in the theater bathroom after the movie said it best “I didn’t even feel like I was watching a movie. Wonderful cinematography, astounding performances, and just such heart. One of the most raw and genuine and realistic movies of the past 10 years. Just cemented to me that Star Wars fanboys should really get the fuck over themselves.īy far the best of the year. And is it worth the vitriolic hate it gets? No.

It’s easily the most unorthodox major blockbuster franchise film I’ve ever seen. I love the direction it took the story and characters and it’s visually gorgeous. I loved every minute of that massive messy movie. I still haven’t seen a lot of films that I think could make this list, and it’s been ever changing all year.īut I’d say most of these are pretty accurate.Ĭertainly not the best I’ve seen this year, but goddamn did I adore it. Still have to see: The Shape of Water, Darkest Hour, Mudbound, 1922, Okja, Call Me By Your Name, The Post, All the Money in the World, I Tonya, Phantom Thread, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Thank You For Your Service, Last Flag Flying, Colossal, A Ghost Story, Brigsby Bear, Stronger, Super Dark Times, The Florida Project, Just missed the list: Logan Lucky, It, The Disaster Artist, Only the Brave, Your Name, War for the Planet of the Apes, Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Wonder Woman, Trainspotting 2, The Lost City of Z, John Wick 2, The Lego Batman Movie, The Big Sick, Detroit

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.Haven't seen everything I want to see yet (I'll probably see Jumanji, Darkest Hour, Mudbound, and The Shape of Water before the year is over), but here's my top 10 at the moment: Star Wars The Last Jedi (Yes, there are many problems with this movie (although the positives overweigh the negatives to a huge degree), but overall, I find it to be a bold and ambitious blockbuster (which worked for me, personally) that I found myself having tons of fun with, and also cemented Rian Johnson as one of my favourite modern directors). The Disaster Artist (Despite flaws, Disaster Artist is a blast that ends up being quite inspiring).Blade Runner 2049 (Like Dunkirk, Denis and his entire cast and crew put 110% effort into it, and as a result, made a movie that I honestly believe is a masterpiece, and is destined to become a classic in the future, and this film confirmed Denis is now one of my favourite filmmakers).

Baby Driver (One of the most genuinely fun and entertaining movies I've seen in a while, Edgar Wright is my favourite filmmaker, for a reason).Dunkirk (The best cinematic experience I've had in a long time, Nolan and his entire cast and crew all put 110% effort into the movie, and it absolutely shows).
